HRA Exemption Calculator
This HRA calculator computes your exact house rent allowance exemption using the least-of-three rule in Section 10(13A) — actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic+DA, and 50% (metro) or 40% (non-metro) of basic+DA. All three legs are shown side by side, with the smallest one highlighted, so you see exactly which rule is limiting your exemption.

Questions people ask
How is HRA exemption calculated?
It's the least of three amounts: actual HRA received, rent paid minus 10% of basic+DA, and 50% (metro) or 40% (non-metro) of basic+DA. Whichever of the three is smallest becomes your exempt amount — this calculator shows all three so you see exactly which one is limiting you.
Is HRA exempt in the new tax regime?
No — HRA exemption under Section 10(13A) is available only under the old tax regime. If you are on the new regime, HRA received is fully taxable as part of your salary; compare both regimes with our income tax calculator before deciding which to file under.
Do I need rent receipts to claim HRA?
Employers typically require rent receipts once monthly rent crosses ₹3,000, and the landlord's PAN once annual rent crosses ₹1 lakh. Our rent receipt generator creates properly formatted receipts free, and this HRA calculator links directly to it.
Can I pay rent to my parents and claim HRA?
Yes, if the arrangement is genuine — you actually pay the rent (ideally by bank transfer, not cash) and your parents own the house and declare the amount as their rental income. This is a well-established, legitimate structure, not a loophole, provided it is not staged only for the deduction.
Which cities count as metro for the 50% HRA limb?
Only Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai qualify for the 50%-of-basic limb — every other city, including Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad, uses the 40% non-metro limb regardless of local rent levels.
Is my salary and rent information private?
Yes — the calculation runs entirely in your browser, nothing is uploaded, and the page keeps working offline once it has loaded.
