Questions people ask

What are the new regime tax slabs for FY 2026-27?

0–4L: nil, 4–8L: 5%, 8–12L: 10%, 12–16L: 15%, 16–20L: 20%, 20–24L: 25%, above 24L: 30% — plus 4% cess on the tax. These figures are shown here as verified in August 2026; always check the current Finance Act before filing.

Is income up to ₹12.75 lakh really tax-free under the new regime?

Yes, for a salaried taxpayer with no other deductions: the ₹75,000 standard deduction brings a ₹12.75 lakh salary down to ₹12 lakh taxable income, and the ₹60,000 rebate (available up to that exact threshold) wipes the computed tax to zero.

How much tax on a ₹15 lakh salary in the new regime?

About ₹97,500 including cess, after the ₹75,000 standard deduction brings taxable income to ₹14,25,000 — this calculator shows the exact slab-wise split for your own salary figure.

Which regime is better — new or old?

The new regime wins for most salaried people without large deductions, since it has wider slabs and a bigger rebate. The old regime can win if you have substantial 80C investments, a home loan, HRA exemption and 80D insurance stacked together — enter your figures in the deductions panel and let the calculator compare.

What is marginal relief and when does it apply?

Just above the rebate threshold (₹12 lakh taxable in the new regime), the rule caps your tax at the amount your income exceeds ₹12 lakh by — so someone earning ₹12.1 lakh taxable never ends up with less take-home than someone earning exactly ₹12 lakh. This calculator applies it automatically when it kicks in.

Can I switch tax regimes every year?

Salaried taxpayers with no business income can choose their regime afresh each year while filing their return — there is no lock-in. Those with business or professional income face restrictions on switching back to the old regime after opting for the new one.
