Video Compressor for WhatsApp
Compress a video for WhatsApp right in your browser — no app install, no upload to some server first. WhatsApp caps a status video at 16MB and heavily re-compresses anything big you send in chat; compressing it yourself first means YOU choose what quality survives, and the send finishes in seconds even on slow data. The 16MB target is preselected.

This is a large file (over 500 MB). It will still work — everything streams from disk — but expect the encode to take a while, especially on a phone. Keep this tab in the foreground until it finishes.
The result is aimed a few percent under this number so it clears the platform limit.

How to use this tool
-
Drop your video
Any MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV — the 16MB WhatsApp target is preselected. Sending as a document instead? WhatsApp allows up to 2GB there, so you may only need light compression via a custom target.
-
Compress on your phone or laptop
The encode runs on your own device at hardware speed — nothing uploads, so it works fine on hotel Wi-Fi or mobile data.
-
Download the MP4 and share it. Because it's already under the limit, WhatsApp barely re-compresses it — your video arrives looking the way you sent it.
Questions people ask
What is the WhatsApp video size limit?
A status update caps at 16MB (roughly 30–90 seconds of decent-quality video). In-chat media also works best under 16MB — WhatsApp aggressively re-compresses larger videos. Sending as a *document* allows up to 2GB but plays less conveniently for the receiver.
Why does WhatsApp ruin my video quality?
WhatsApp re-encodes every video you send as media, optimising for size on poor connections. The bigger your original, the harder it squeezes. If you compress to under 16MB yourself first, WhatsApp mostly leaves it alone — so you control the quality instead of their encoder.
How do I compress a video for WhatsApp status?
Drop the video here with the 16MB preset selected and hit Compress. If your clip is longer than about 90 seconds, remember status only plays the first 30 seconds per segment — trimming to the part you want gives far better quality at 16MB.
Does this work on a phone?
Yes — Chrome on Android compresses at hardware speed, and there's no app to install. On iPhone, Safari 16.4+ works; after downloading, use Share → Save Video to put the result in your camera roll for WhatsApp.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser using your device's own hardware video encoder (WebCodecs). This site has no upload endpoint for the tool at all — the video never leaves your device, and there is no upload wait before compression even starts.
Does compressing a video reduce quality?
Yes — a smaller file means less data. The tool keeps quality as high as the target allows by downscaling resolution intelligently instead of just starving the bitrate, and it shows you an honest quality estimate before you run.
What video formats can I compress?
MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV in; MP4 (H.264 + AAC) out — the most compatible format for every platform and player.
Which browsers does this work in?
Chrome and Edge (desktop and Android) have full hardware encoding support. Firefox and older Safari versions may lack the WebCodecs encoder — the tool detects this and tells you plainly instead of spinning forever.
