SSC Typing Test Mock
This SSC typing test mock scores you the way the commission does: net WPM against the DEST benchmark of roughly 35 WPM in English (about 8,000 key depressions per hour), using formal essay-register passages like the real Data Entry Speed Test instead of casual prose. Take 5 or 10 minute runs to build the endurance the 15-minute DEST demands, and watch pass/fail against the benchmark after every attempt.

Your result
{{ exam.name }} benchmark: {{ exam.wpm }} WPM. You cleared it with {{ result.netWpm }} net WPM — keep this consistency in the real exam. You are at {{ result.netWpm }} net WPM — {{ exam.wpm - result.netWpm }} more to go. {{ exam.note }}
Net WPM = gross WPM minus uncorrected errors per minute — exams score net, so an error you fixed with backspace costs time, but an error you left costs a full word.

How to use this tool
-
Choose a longer duration
The real DEST runs 15 minutes on a ~2000-key-depression passage; practise at 5 and 10 minutes here so your speed does not collapse after minute three.
-
Type the exam-register passage
Passages use the formal essay style SSC favours — governance, economy, environment — with the punctuation density of the actual test.
-
Compare against the benchmark
Your result shows pass/fail against 35 WPM net and exactly how many WPM you still need, plus your trend across attempts.
Questions people ask
What typing speed is needed for SSC CHSL and CGL?
CHSL DEST expects about 35 WPM in English or 30 WPM in Hindi (the notification phrases it as 8,000/9,000 key depressions per hour). CGL's DEST for tax assistant posts uses the same 8,000 depressions standard. This mock scores you against 35 WPM net.
Is the SSC test scored on gross or net speed?
Effectively net — errors are penalised against your speed. That is why this mock leads with net WPM: 45 gross with sloppy accuracy can score below 33 net and fail a benchmark your gross speed suggests you clear.
What kind of passage appears in the real DEST?
A continuous formal English passage — typically on policy, economy or general-interest topics — of around 2,000 key depressions typed in 15 minutes. The practice passages here copy that register and punctuation density.
Are backspaces allowed in the SSC typing test?
Yes, correction is allowed in the DEST. But every correction costs time, so the winning strategy is slowing down 5% to nearly eliminate errors — this mock counts your backspaces so you can see the trade-off.
Who is exempt from the DEST?
Candidates with certain disabilities can be exempted per the notification rules. Everyone else must qualify — it is qualifying in nature, so you need to clear the benchmark, not top it.
