Questions people ask

Do freelancers in India need to charge GST?

Only after registering, which becomes mandatory once your turnover crosses ₹20 lakh in a financial year (₹10 lakh in special-category states). Below that you can invoice without GST — leave the GSTIN blank and set the rate to 0%. Note there is no threshold exemption for inter-state supply of goods, but services are covered by the ₹20 lakh limit.

What SAC code do I use for freelance services?

SAC codes classify services under GST: 998314 covers IT design and development, 998391 covers other specialty design, 998211-998216 cover legal services, and content writing typically falls under 998397. Check your exact service on the CBIC SAC list and use the same code consistently.

Why did my client pay 10% less than the invoice?

That's TDS under section 194J — companies must deduct 10% on professional fees above ₹30,000 a year and deposit it against your PAN. It's not a haircut: it appears in your Form 26AS and offsets your income-tax bill. This invoice's footer carries a TDS note so clients account for it correctly.

Should I invoice foreign clients with this?

For export of services, GST is zero-rated — most freelancers file a LUT (Letter of Undertaking) and invoice at 0% GST. For the invoice itself, our plain invoice generator with USD/EUR currency is often the better fit; this page is tuned to domestic billing.

What payment terms should a freelancer use?

"Net 15" or "50% advance, 50% on delivery" are the two that actually work in India. Print the due date on the invoice — a dated document changes the conversation when payment slips.

Is my client data stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser's local storage, so repeat clients are one tap. Nothing is uploaded — the invoice is generated entirely on your device.
