DPDP Act Privacy Policy Generator (India)
Most privacy policy generators are written for GDPR and never mention Indian law. This one is built around the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023: it drafts your policy in the Act's own vocabulary — you as the Data Fiduciary, your users as Data Principals, consent notices, a grievance contact, and escalation to the Data Protection Board of India. Free, assembled in your browser, and honestly labelled: a template for your lawyer to finish, not a compliance certificate.

How to use this tool
-
Answer the questionnaire (India preset on)
The DPDP sections are locked on for this page. Fill in your business, the data you collect and the tools you use — and add GDPR/CCPA only if you also serve those users.
-
Name a grievance contact
The Act's grievance-redressal mechanism needs a real, monitored address. Use a role inbox like grievance@yourdomain so it survives staff changes.
-
Generate, publish, and get it reviewed
Copy the HTML into your site or download it — then have a lawyer verify it against your actual data flows and the DPDP rules as they are notified.
Questions people ask
What is the DPDP Act 2023?
The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 is India's data-protection law. It applies to digital personal data processed in India (and to processing abroad connected to offering goods or services to people in India), sets duties for businesses, and creates the Data Protection Board of India to hear complaints and impose penalties.
What is a Data Fiduciary and a Data Principal?
The Act's two core roles: the Data Fiduciary is whoever decides why and how personal data is processed — your business — and the Data Principal is the individual the data is about. The policy this tool drafts uses those terms because DPDP compliance conversations happen in them.
What does the DPDP Act require my privacy notice to say?
Notice must accompany or precede a consent request and describe the personal data collected, the purpose of processing, how Data Principals can exercise their rights, and how to complain — to you and to the Data Protection Board. The generated policy is structured around exactly that checklist.
Do I need a grievance officer?
The Act requires Data Fiduciaries to provide a readily available means of grievance redressal, and answering grievances is a precondition before a Data Principal escalates to the Board. Significant Data Fiduciaries (a government-notified class) carry heavier duties, including a Data Protection Officer in India. The template includes a grievance-contact clause with the email you provide.
What rights do my users have under the DPDP Act?
Data Principals can access a summary of their data and processing, demand correction and erasure, nominate someone to act for them if they die or become incapacitated, and have grievances heard. They also have duties — like not filing false complaints. The generated policy lists the rights and how to exercise them with you.
What are the penalties for getting this wrong?
The Act allows the Data Protection Board to impose penalties running to hundreds of crores of rupees for serious breaches, such as failing to protect data. A privacy policy alone doesn't protect you — your actual practices must match it. That's the strongest reason to have a professional review both.
Is this DPDP policy generator a compliance guarantee?
No — and be wary of any generator claiming otherwise. The DPDP rules that operationalise the Act are being phased in, and obligations vary by business. This tool gives you a well-structured, correctly-worded starting document; a lawyer makes it yours.
