Compress Video to 8MB

Compress any video to under 8MB right in your browser — no upload, no queue, no watermark. 8MB was the classic Discord free limit and is still the safest "sends anywhere" size for old forum attachments, email signatures and low-limit chat apps. The tool calculates the exact bitrate for your clip's length, encodes, verifies the size, and runs a correction pass if needed.

  • Works offline once loaded

This is a large file (over 500 MB). It will still work — everything streams from disk — but expect the encode to take a while, especially on a phone. Keep this tab in the foreground until it finishes.

How to use this tool

  1. Drop your video

MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV, any size — the 8MB target is already selected for you.

  2. Check the quality estimate

The tool shows the bitrate your clip length allows at 8MB. If it reads "Rough", trim the clip shorter first for a much better-looking result.

  3. Compress and download

Hit Compress, watch both passes if a correction is needed, and download an MP4 that lands just under 8MB.

Questions people ask

How do I compress a video to exactly 8MB?

Drop the file and hit Compress — the 8MB preset is already selected. The tool calculates the exact bitrate for your video's length, encodes, verifies the size, and re-runs a correction pass if needed, so the result lands just under 8MB.

Is 8MB still the Discord limit?

No — Discord's free upload limit is currently 10MB (it was 8MB for years, which is why "compress to 8MB" stuck). 8MB still sends fine on Discord, but if that's your platform, our Discord compressor page targets the current 10MB limit and explains the Nitro tiers.

How long can a video be and still look good at 8MB?

As a rule of thumb: under 1 minute looks good, 1–3 minutes looks acceptable at reduced resolution, and beyond 5 minutes gets rough because 8MB spread over that much time leaves very little data per second. Trim first if you can.

Is my video uploaded to a server?

No. Everything runs in your browser using your device's own hardware video encoder (WebCodecs). This site has no upload endpoint for the tool at all — the video never leaves your device, and there is no upload wait before compression even starts.

Does compressing a video reduce quality?

Yes — a smaller file means less data. The tool keeps quality as high as the target allows by downscaling resolution intelligently instead of just starving the bitrate, and it shows you an honest quality estimate before you run.

What video formats can I compress?

MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV in; MP4 (H.264 + AAC) out — the most compatible format for every platform and player.

Which browsers does this work in?

Chrome and Edge (desktop and Android) have full hardware encoding support. Firefox and older Safari versions may lack the WebCodecs encoder — the tool detects this and tells you plainly instead of spinning forever.
