How to use this tool

    Drop the image onto the box or tap to choose one. This page has no upload endpoint; the photo is opened by your browser, not sent anywhere.

  2. Pick a model and approve the one-time download

    The AI model — Fast (~25 MB, portraits) or Accurate (~170 MB, any subject) — downloads once from the Hugging Face CDN and is cached. That is the only network transfer involved, and it is the model coming to you, never your photo going out.

  3. Download the transparent PNG

    Segmentation runs on your own hardware. Once the model is cached, you can even go offline before choosing a photo and it still works.

How can I remove a background without uploading my photo?

Use an on-device tool like this one. The segmentation AI is downloaded to your browser and runs there, so the photo itself is never transmitted — the reverse of the usual upload-to-a-server workflow.

Is anything downloaded from the internet at all?

Yes, once, and we want to be precise about it: the AI model (roughly 28–46 MB for the Fast tier, or about 190 MB for the Accurate tier, runtime included) comes from the Hugging Face and jsDelivr CDNs the first time you use the tool, then lives in your browser cache. Your image, on the other hand, is never downloaded or uploaded by anyone — it stays on your device from start to finish.

Does it really work offline?

After the one-time model download is cached, yes — you can disconnect from the internet, reload this page, and keep removing backgrounds. The first ever use needs a connection to fetch the model.

Why does privacy matter for background removal?

People routinely run ID photos, product prototypes and family pictures through background removers. With an upload-based service you are trusting their retention policy; with an on-device tool there is nothing to retain, because the image never left your machine.

Is there a limit on how many images I can process?

No limits and no watermark. Your device does the computing, so there are no server costs for us to meter — remove backgrounds from as many images as you like, free.

Why do I have to download an AI model first?

The AI has to live somewhere, and here it lives on your device instead of on a server. You pick the size: the Fast model is roughly 28–46 MB including the runtime, the Accurate one about 190 MB. Either download happens once and is what makes it possible for your photos to stay private — the second visit loads it straight from your browser cache.

Which AI model does this use, and can I use the output commercially?

Two open-source models, your choice: Fast is MODNet (Xenova/modnet, Apache-2.0), a small portrait matting model that is at its best on photos of people; Accurate is ISNet general-use (the DIS segmentation model, Apache-2.0, run via the MIT-licensed ONNX Runtime), which also handles products, logos, animals and other objects. Both licences permit commercial use, so your cutouts are yours for shops, ads or client work.
